The measurement specialists for water and wastewater systems have launched a doctoral thesis in order to deal with future challenges posed by practical experience even better. The results of this doctoral thesis have now been published. Dr.-Ing. Laurent Solliec in cooperation with the University of Strasbourg has examined the flow and streaming behaviour of water in open channels and flumes behind disturbances. The focus was on the efficient detection of accurate local velocities to achieve maximum accuracy in flow measurement.
The present doctoral thesis due to the required measurement accuracies describes flow measurement systems based on the cross correlation method. The main objective was to create an accurate mathematical real-time model which can be used to calculate the real average velocity from the local velocities measured in part filled channels featuring disturbances.
In practical use it is very often not possible to sufficiently consider the required calming sections as a result of structural design conditions. It was therefore necessary to measure at spots with adverse conditions such as channel bows or lateral intakes. These conditions have been compensated e.g. by expensive construction measures so far. The new hydraulic approach allows to reduce the number of sensors while providing high accuracy. Hence the results of the doctoral thesis allow more accurate and more efficient flow measurements for future device generations.
